How to access resources from UNC Hospitals
Having trouble using your Onyen to get to Health Sciences Library databases, journals and ebooks?
Try using the Firefox or Google Chrome browsers first.
If Internet Explorer is the only browser you have:
- Open Internet Explorer and select “Internet Options” from the tools menu.
- Select the “Advanced” tab options and scroll down until you see “SSL” options.
- Ensure that “Use SSL 3.0” and “Use TLS 1.0” are checked (highlighted in the image).
- Click OK to save and then re-launch Internet Explorer.

You can also use HSL’s Ask a Librarian service for questions via email or live chat.
It’s now required to use your Onyen login to get to Health Sciences Library (HSL) resources. If you don’t have an Onyen or the password has expired, check out the resources linked below.
Need an Onyen?
For new users, UNC Onyen usernames can be created using Onyen Services. Currently, passwords expire every three months.
What’s a PID?
The Person ID Number (PID) is an identification number assigned to all people with a university relationship, as defined by an official university department. This number is designed to give all persons a universal number (PID or Person ID) that is unique to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Forget your PID?
If you’ve forgotten your PID, visit What’s My PID page, or use the ID number on your UNC Medical Center parking card.
Forget your Onyen?
Look up your Onyen with your last name, UNC PID number and your date of birth.
Forget your password?
Onyen passwords can be retrieved on the Onyen Services page by entering your Onyen username and answering your security questions.
