HSL salutes Oliver Smithies, Excellence Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. He is a co-recipient of the 2007 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, along with Mario R. Capecchi and Martin J. Evans. They won the award “for their discoveries of principles for introducing specific gene modifications in mice by the use of embryonic stem cells.”

During his long and distinguished career, Dr. Smithies has published hundreds of articles — 388 by last count, according to the Web of Science. His articles have been cited a total of 46,388 times, with an average of 119.56 citations per item and an average of 875.25 citations per year! “He sought to disseminate every single discovery he made so others could use it,” noted Dr. Stuart Bondurant, former Dean of the UNC-CH School of Medicine.
