HSL presents understanding health informatics video series
Health Sciences Library (HSL) staff participated in a professional development session called “Understanding Health Informatics.” Faculty and staff from the Carolina Health Informatics Program (CHIP), which is housed on the second floor of the HSL, offered presentations on the field of health informatics and discussion of how the library could collaborate with the CHIP program.
A video series which includes each presentation is available.
Speakers and Topics:
Introduction to the Carolina Health Informatics Program
Director of the CHIP program Dr. Javed Mostafa explained the development and partners in this interdisciplinary program.
Ashraf Farrag, a CHIP certificate graduate and Research Analysis Consultant for the North Carolina Translational and Clinical Sciences Institute (NC TRaCS), explained the field of health informatics from a general perspective, the difference between health and bioinformatics, and the types of data he uses in his work.
Debbie Travers, assistant professor in the School of Nursing, shared how health informatics serves as a core bridge from the clinical environment and the information technology field. She shared terminology, the informatics programs in the School of Nursing, typical position titles and research projects in informatics.
Brad Hemminger, associate professor the School of Information and Library Science (SILS), shared several of his research projects and areas where library and information skillsets could benefit the research process.
David Gotz, assistant director of CHIP, discussed his primary research focus in the study and development of interactive visual methods for information analysis and communication. He explained his research efforts that are trying to figure out how to combine data analytics with interactive visualization and interfaces that are equipped to process large volumes of data to drive insights and decisions.
