Stephanie Griffin, interlibrary borrowing and billing specialist, earned the Award for Dedicated Service at the eighteenth annual Staff Appreciation and Recognition ceremony at the Health Science Library (HSL) on April 29. The ceremony included remarks by Jim Curtis, interim director of the HSL, Carol Tresolini, vice provost for academic initiatives, and John Paul, clinical professor in the Department of Health Policy and Management in the Gillings School of Global Public Health and Friend of the Health Sciences Library.

Nominated by several of her peers, Curtis shared numerous remarks about Griffin’s work ethic, commitment to the Library and enthusiasm.

One colleagues said, “Stephanie delivers requested information in a timely and professional manner. If she has a higher than usual number of requests, which seems to happen with more and more frequency, she will often skip breaks and lunch to make sure her customers have what they need before she leaves for the day… Stephanie puts HSL customers first.”

“She raises the bar for all of us.”

Griffin started at the HSL in 2001 as an office assistant in the Library’s administrative office. She moved into Resources Management Services in 2003, as a specialist in interlibrary loan and document delivery. Griffin has been an instrumental resource in the Library’s use of the ILLiad System (InterLibrary Loan internet accessible database), which patrons can use to request an item through interlibrary loan.

Griffin’s former supervisor, Melanie Norton, who has moved on to a position at Harvey Cushing/John Hay Whitney Medical Library at Yale University, provided support to Griffin’s nomination.

Norton said, “Stephanie respects the urgency of the informational needs of health care professionals and recognizes the possibility of negative patient outcomes if important information is not quickly delivered.”

“Stephanie is a dedicated, personable individual who is passionate about her job and willing to share her knowledge with others. I left UNC’s HSL four years ago but continue to contact Stephanie for help with ILLiad issues. She is very helpful and kind to my current staff.”

Griffin was further applauded by her colleagues for her dedication, her service and representation of HSL staff members on the SPA Forum, being congenial and responsible, and an early, go-getter.
