Moynihan joins HSL to lead health information technology efforts
Brian Moynihan joined the Health Sciences Library at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on October 1 as the Head of Health Information Technology Initiatives, a position created to help HSL stay on the forefront of technological innovation happening in health care education, practice, and research. Moynihan will lead the Health Sciences Library’s information technology initiatives, including management and direction of the Library’s web presences, health informatics, access to clinical and point-of-care tools, usability and user experience, data management and visualization, mHealth, digitization, and emerging technologies.
With more than ten years of experience in consulting and project management, Moynihan brings “a blend of strategic thinking and an understanding of health education, the health care industry, and emerging health technologies,” interim director Christie Degener said. “New technology presents challenges to our patrons like managing big data, providing essential visualizations of their data, and sifting through an ever-growing information landscape,” said Diana McDuffee, Assistant Director (interim) and Head of AHEC and Outreach Services Department. “Constant innovation as a library is crucial to the success of the students, educators and health practitioners we serve and for us to remain one of the top Health Sciences Libraries in the country.”
Moynihan will also provide leadership and collaboration with University Library and campus programs, including the Research Hub @ HSL, the University Library’s Library and Information Technology Department, the Carolina Health Informatics Program (CHIP), UNC Information Technology Services, and UNC Health Care.
Prior to this appointment, Moynihan was the Health Strategy Director for Thrive 4-7 in Morrisville, North Carolina. He was previously the IT Project Manager for the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants in Durham, North Carolina as well as the Project Manager/Applications Analyst and Program Manager for the UNC School of Medicine. Moynihan co-founded Health 2.0 NC, an organization of over 950 local professionals working in health innovation and technology, in 2013. He also created a health-themed Startup Weekend in 2014, and has been active as a mentor and consultant for local health IT startup companies.
Moynihan holds an M.S.I.S. and an M.B.A. from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, as well as an M.A. in Comparative Religion and a Bachelor of Philosophy in Interdisciplinary Studies from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.
