The Research Hub @ HSL offers classes throughout the year on the topics listed below. Filter the list by topic category to quickly review the classes of most interest to you.

Introduction to Bioinformatics Basics: A Five Workshop Sequence

The Introduction to Bioinformatics Basics workshop sequence includes five one-hour workshops which provide an introduction to bioinformatics data types, basic quality control of short read data including assessing quality and filtering data, and basic methods in bioinformatics including how to align data to a reference genome and call variants. Time permitting, some scripting will be covered as well.

Prerequisites: The six workshops in the Introduction to the UNIX Shell: A Six Workshop Sequence are prerequisites for the five workshops in this Introduction to Bioinformatics Basics: A Five Workshop Sequence. See details about the entire eleven-workshop series including prerequisite and account requirements on the Bioinformatics@HSL guide

Introduction to PubMed (Online via Zoom)

This interactive class will cover the basics of literature searching utilizing the new PubMed interface. This class is intended for students, faculty, or staff unfamiliar with PubMed’s redesigned interface or those new to literature searching. Participants will learn to navigate the database, conduct basic literature searches, and strategies for improving searches. This class will be highly interactive and participants will have the opportunity to work in small groups and practice with hands-on literature searching. Please plan to use audio and video (if possible) during this session.

If applicable, please bring a draft search strategy for a current or future research project that you would like to refine in this workshop. (If not, we’ll provide a sample topic and search.)

Introduction to the UNIX Shell: A Six Workshop Sequence

The six Introduction to the UNIX Shell workshops are a chained sequence of six one-hour workshops to introduce participants to the UNIX command line, basic commands, navigating file system, setting up bioinformatics projects, and introductory scripting. Each class will build upon the last and each session is a prerequisite for the next class in the six-workshop UNIX sequence. The six workshops in the UNIX block are in turn prerequisites for the bioinformatics workshops which follow in the series.
