Managing Stress Through Technology

Finals are coming around the corner and stress levels can be at an all time high! The Health Sciences Library has some suggestions to help you manage your stress and stay calm through this tough time.
Listen to your brain
The Muse headband senses your brainwaves. It guides you through a meditation session helping you calm your mind through sound. As your mind is active, the sound of rain is louder. As you calm your mind, the rain stops and you hear birds. Give the Muse 1 or Muse 2 a try and listen to your brain!
Use Virtual Reality to take you to a happy place
The usage of virtual reality headsets like the HTC Vive or Oculus Go have opened up a new avenue for mindfulness. There are also VR apps available through your phone and Google Cardboard to help you reach your happy place.
Guided Meditation is an app available for the Oculus Go or Samsung Gear VR headsets. With over 100+ locations to meditate, ponder, or unwind you can find the right location for your guided meditation to nirvana.
IntelliSense VR Mindfulness Trainer works with your phone and either Google Cardboard or a VR headset. The app listens to your heart rate via an ear clip sensor and responds by changing the VR environment to match your emotional state.
Use your phone to help relieve stress
The are many free and paid mobile apps available to help with mindfulness and relaxation. Most apps can be found under the category of Health & Fitness. Here are a few to get you started.
Stop, Breathe & Think – The app encourages mindful thinking and offers a range of meditation techniquest to choose from to fit your own style of winding down and finding inner peace. Cost: Free. Available for iOS and Android.
Happify – Provides users with de-stress games, motivational articles, quotes and audio tracks created by actual psychology coaches. Cost: Free, but does offer in-app purchases. Available for iOS and Android.
Calm – Voted the App of the Year in 2017 by Apple. Enjoy 100+ guided meditations to help you manage anxiety, lower stress and sleep better. Calm is the perfect mindfulness app for beginners, but also includes hundreds of programs for intermediate and advanced users. Cost: Calm Premium is free to try for 7 days, then $59.99 USD billed annually. You can also get Calm for life for just $400.
