Road Construction Impacting Travel to HSL Begins May 13
Due to the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) project to widen and enhance South Columbia Street between Purefoy Road and Manning Drive and other road construction projects in the southern portion of Chapel Hill and Carrboro, Chapel Hill Transit (CHT) will be implementing schedule changes and detours beginning May 13, 2013.

Driving Directions
From Raleigh and points east:
- Take 1-40 West
- Merge onto NC-54 W via Exit 273A toward Chapel Hill
- Stay straight to go onto Raleigh Road/NC-54 W
- Turn slight left onto McCauley Street
- Turn left onto Pittsboro Street
- Take the curve to the left and straight through the light onto Manning Drive
- At the fourth stoplight, turn right onto East Drive
- Turn right into the entrance of the Dogwood Parking Deck. View Map
From points west on US I-40:
- Take exit 170 for US 15-501
- Turn right and head south on US 15-501 for approximately 4.5 miles
- Turn right onto Manning Drive
- At the fourth stoplight, turn left onto East Drive
- Turn right into the entrance of the Dogwood Parking Deck. View Map
From the intersection of Franklin and Columbia Streets in Chapel Hill:
- Go south 1 block on Columbia Street and follow the traffic flow right at Cameron Avenue and left onto Pittsboro Street. Hint: follow the blue H(ospital) Trauma Center signs.
- Take the left fork and cross Columbia Street to Manning Drive.
- At the fourth stoplight, turn right onto East Drive
- Turn right into the entrance of the Dogwood Parking Deck. View Map
From Pittsboro and points south:
- Go north on US 15-501 and as you approach Chapel Hill turn right on North Carolina 54 East/US 15-501 North
- After approximately 1.2 miles, turn left onto Manning Drive
- At the fourth stoplight, turn left onto East Drive
- Turn right into the entrance of the Dogwood Parking Deck. View Map
Walking Directions

- After parking, walk west 1 (long) block on Manning Drive to Columbia Street.
- Turn right and walk north 1/2 block on Columbia Street. HSL is the 5-story brick building on the right. (Landmark: A pedestrian stoplight is directly in front of the library.)
- Inside route:
- From the Dogwood deck, follow the signs to the Dental School.
- Continue walking past Tarrson Hall and enter the doorway off the patio between Tarrson Hall and the School of Dentistry building.
- Take the elevator to the first floor and turn left.
- Follow posted signs to the library and continue down the hall.
- Go through the door at the end of the hall; this will put you in the MacNider building.
- Turn left and continue down the short hallway and take stairs on the right.
- Take exit door at the top of stairs and exit the building.
- This will put you near the back door of the Health Sciences Library and the Sam Hitt Medicinal Gardens.
- Inside route (ADA accessible):
- From the Dogwood deck, follow the signs to the Dental School.
- Continue walking past Tarrson Hall and enter the doorway off the patio between Tarrson Hall and the School of Dentistry building.
- Take the elevator to the first floor and turn left.
- Follow posted signs to the library and continue down the hall.
- Go through the door at the end of the hall; this will put you in the MacNider building.
- Continue straight ahead down the hall. Just past the HSL service corridor (which will be on the left), take the elevator on the right to the first floor.
- Upon exiting the elevator, turn left and exit MacNider on the right.
- Continue straight into the Health Sciences Library
Park and Ride Lots
Chapel Hill Transit operates express and local bus service from Park and Ride lots in both Chapel Hill and Carrboro. Park and Ride service is a fast, efficient way to get to the UNC campus, hospitals, and downtown Chapel Hill. There are also four Park and Ride lots to utilize.
